TENNIS
Sec. 1 The format for both boys’ and girls will be 6 singles and 3 doubles, for a total of nine matches.
Sec 2. The number one singles player must be ranked higher on the teams’ individual players strength ladder than the number two player. The number two singles player must be ranked higher than the number three player. The number three singles player must be ranked higher than the number four singles player, etc. Lineups between matches may change provided the above sentences apply.(See example)
Doubles teams will be set as of strength according to their teams’ individual player strength ladder. (see example). We will use the NCS Team Tennis Bylaws 24.513H for doubles composition and ranking. In doubles play, the sum of the individual ranking of each player based on the team’s ladder will determine whether they play #1, #2 or #3 doubles spot. (See example below) The submitted team ladder must represent the strongest ladder for their team. No player will be listed on the doubles team unless they are listed on the teams’ individual player strength ladder in order of their strength.
Moving players around with the intent of gaining an advantage is not allowed and shall subject the team to default.

Example: Team individual players’ strength ladder
1 Player Number 1 is First Singles
2 Player Number 2 is Second Singles
3 Player Number 3 and Player Number 6 are the First Doubles Team* Their total is 9 (3+6)
4 Player Number 4 slides up to play the third singles spot.
5 Player Number 5 and Player Number 7 form another doubles team. Their sum is 12, which means they will be designated as the #2 or #3 doubles team depending on the sum of the last doubles team.
6 Player Number 6 is playing doubles with #3.
7 Player Number 7 is playing doubles with #5
8 Player Number 8 slides up to play fourth singles.
9 Player Number 9
10 Player Number 10 form the last doubles team.
Their sum is the highest sum (19) of all doubles teams. This doubles team must play at the #3 doubles spot.
Player Number 10 is playing doubles with #9.
Player Number 11 slides up to the fifth singles spot.
Player # 12 slides up to play in the 6th singles spot.
Note *Player Number 3 & 6 are the first doubles team because player #3 is the highest ranked player on the Team Individual Player Strength Ladder of all the double players.
Note: If the sum of any of the ladder positions for two or three of the teams is equal, then the highest ranked individual player shall play on the higher ranked doubles team. 9/4/08
Sec. 3 The Penn extra heavy duty tennis ball or equivalent is the official ball to be used in all team matches and the EBAL tournament.
Sec. 4 All team matches will start by 4:00 PM.
Sec. 5 During inclement weather the home team Athletic Director will initiate a courtesy call regarding the playability of courts to the traveling team Athletic Director between 12:00 and 12:30 pm. (9/21/00) If a match is “called” because of darkness, rain, or any other reason, that match will be continued from the point of interruption on a mutually agreed upon date that is scheduled as soon as possible by the opposing coaches. The match will continue from the point at which it was called. If a team has already won the match (i.e. has 5 points) at the point of interruption, if both coaches agree, a winner may be declared on an individual match according to the following method:
Sec. 6 Coaching during team competition is allowed by designated coaches only and will never interfere with continuous play. A coach may coach a player any time during the match so long as the coach does not interfere with play. Coaches shall not in any way distract or annoy, or talk to the opposing player. A violation of these provisions shall result in the player on the court where the violation occurred being assessed a point penalty. (Penalties for coaching are not treated as part of the Point Penalty System, and they do not accumulate). USTA has a maximum of 20 seconds between points, and 90 seconds on changeovers.
Coaches Location: Coaches may not sit or stand anywhere that interferes / obstructs with play. The coach’s movement shall be limited so as to not distract the players. A coach may change courts when the movement will not interrupt play. Coaches may coach within the lines of the court only during a changeover, set break or when changing courts. Only two coaches may coach at the same court at the same time. Each team will be allowed two coaches designated as Head Coach and Assistant Coach. At no time during the course of a march, excluding injury, will a coach, parent or other player be allowed within the playing area of the competitors. Coaching will follow all NCS and USTA guidelines with regards to the EBAL tournament 04.
Sec. 7 The USTA Point Penalty System will govern all matches with one exception, there will be no warning Code of Conduct violations. Warning to be given prior to start of each match to all players. Penalties are as follows: 1st offense is loss of point; 2nd offense is loss of game; 3rd offense is default match. All other USTA rules governing the game of tennis will be in effect and knowledge of the rules will be the responsibility of each player. Penalties are the sole responsibility of the designated coaches and can be given to either player in the best interest of controlling the match yet not interfering.
Sec. 8 The EBAL Tournament will consist of a Singles Bracket, Doubles bracket, and NCS doubles qualifying bracket. 12 patches will be award
Sec. 9 EBAL Tournament will be No-ad scoring until the quarterfinals.
Sec. 10 League matches are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday.
Sec. 11 Players may not compete in both doubles and singles in dual matches.
Sec. 12 Tennis matches shall be conducted under the rules of the USTA. The tiebreaker rule is mandatory.
Sec. 13 The tennis outfit will be matching uniforms; identical tops, same color shorts (skirts). No cutoffs, street clothes, beachwear, gang apparel, or tank undershirt tops. Warm ups may be worn. (9/21/00).
Sec. 14 In order to participate in the league tournament the athlete must compete in half of the league dual matches. (Exception: Injury with documentation, Medical Hardships" be submitted to the EBAL AD's 72 hours prior to the Tournament Selection Committee for Review and Approval)

Sec. 16 Game ending procedures; Any contest that is suspended for any reason will continue from the point of interruption, unless mutually agreed upon by the schools involved to end the contest (example- game out of reach and both schools agree to end the contest).

Patches will be given to player who reach the semi finals of the singles tournament.
- Doubles Tournament - there will be three entries per school. Any openings in the bracket will be filled by doubles pairs from schools in the order of finish as determined by the league standing ( starting with the league champions, followed by 2nd place, 3rd, etc.) until a full bracket of 32 entries is completed. Patches will be given to player who reach the semi finals of the doubles tournament.
- Open doubles (for NCS advancement - 1 entry per school.) The winner of the open doubles tournament will face the winner of the doubles champion to determine the EBAL automatic qualifier for the NCS doubles tournament
